Founded in 1978, the Solar Energy Laboratory (LES) of the University of Lomé carries out fundamental research, research-and-development and technology dissemination in the field of renewable energy, for the benefit of the Togolese population. It brings together two complementary research teams: the UNESCO Chair on Renewable Energy and the Heat Transfer and Energy Phenomena Group.
Mission
The main goal of the LES is to conduct fundamental research, research-and-development and dissemination of innovative technologies enabling the efficient and optimal use of Togo's significant renewable-energy potential.
Specific objectives
- Develop and characterize materials for renewable energy.
- Design innovative processes and equipment to harness solar photovoltaic, thermal and biomass-energy potential.
- Characterize the thermal and mechanical properties of materials.
- Design and characterize innovative thermal screens for bioclimatic building design and energy efficiency.
- Train researchers and faculty in renewable energy and energy efficiency.
History and leadership
Founded in 1978 by Professor Léopold Messan Gnininvi, the LES has been led successively by three full professors.
